Jivamukti Yoga combines dynamic practice with spiritual teachings.

Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti Yoga is a modern form of Hatha Yoga founded in New York City in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Life. The name “Jivamukti” comes from Sanskrit and means “liberation during one’s lifetime”.

Created to bring the wisdom of the Vedas to modern urbanites, this yoga practice combines physical exercises (asanas) with spiritual elements such as meditation, devotion (bhakti), music and the study of ancient scriptures.

Jivamukti Yoga is characterized by five core principles: Ahimsa, which includes promoting a non-violent lifestyle, including a vegan diet; Bhakti, the integration of devotion and spiritual practices; Dhyana, regular meditation as an integral part of the practice; Nada, the use of music and sound to promote spiritual awareness; and Shastra, the study of yogic scriptures and texts.

The practice is dynamic and physically demanding, with great emphasis on the connection between breath and movement as well as the spiritual and ethical dimensions of yoga. Jivamukti yoga classes can therefore offer a powerful physical challenge while providing profound spiritual experiences.
